Freeman Transport Gravel Racer

Founded in 2006 by Nathaniel Freeman and Benjamin Ferencz, Freeman Transport is a Montana-based company that hand-builds some of the coolest bicycles we’ve seen, all the while focusing on using sustainable materials and limiting their overall impact to the environment as much as possible. We’re particularly fond of the Freeman Transport Gravel Racer (available at Freeman Transport for $985) with its aesthetic homage to Nathaniel Freeman’s great-great-grandfather, whose contributions as an inventor during the Industrial Revolution included the sights for the Colt .45. The Gravel Racer is patinaed with gun bluing and ferric browns and with such a natty appearance, it seems almost out of place in 2009. And while the Gravel Racer can be customized with couplings, stainless steel luggage rack, chain guard, fenders, and can be built fixed or coaster braked, what makes this bicycle special is that it can be entirely broken down and packed into a signature waxed canvas and leather carrying case, whose dimensions of 26” x 26” ensure the bicycle can be checked as baggage without an oversize fee. And with one simple tool to manage all this, it’s the ultimate travel bicycle that can come with you wherever you go.
