Our Favorite Cufflinks (Right Now)

French cuffs, and by extension cufflinks, can be polarizing.  Whichever school of thought you belong to, whether for or against them, one thing remains certain—cufflinks are one of the few, yet significant means by which men can subtly accessorize and add a dash of character to formal attire.  Hence, the editors at DS feel that if you’re going to don the French cuff, do it up right.  And on most days where we opt for cufflinks, we’re more than happy to just slip on a pair of simple Charvet silk knots.  But sometimes the situation requires that you go that extra step to truly differentiate yourself from the hoi polloi.  And for just those occasions where a little more goes a long way, here are our favorite cufflinks.

The DANNIJO Jake Cufflinks (available at DANNIJO for $135) offer an industrial edge to an accessory most well known for being a statement of refinement and class. Each Jake Cufflink is handmade in New York and is available in oxidized brass, oxidized silver, sterling silver, gunmetal, and gold platings (editor’s choice: gunmetal).

Takashimaya Bakelite Dice Cufflinks
In the event you’re ever dressed up in French cuffs, but find yourself getting down to a casual game of dice, the Takashimaya Bakelite Dice Cufflinks (available at Takashimaya for $600) will serve you well in more ways than one. Available in red and green (editor’s choice: green), the vintage Bakelite dice are from the 1950s and housed in handmade sterling silver cages that open up when you’re ready to roll.

Pyscho Bunny Sterling Silver Cufflinks
We’re not sure if we’re still haunted by the bunny from Donnie Darko, but there’s something about the Psycho Bunny Sterling Silver Cufflinks (available at Psycho Bunny for $350) that just speaks to us. Made in England, these cufflinks have the Psycho Bunny logo set in light blue enamel on one side while the P.B. initials are set on the other. Resting smartly in your French cuffs, you never know who else your cufflinks may start resonating with…

Louis Vuitton Silvery Flower Motif Cufflinks
Featuring the Fleur de Monogram motif, these Louis Vuitton Silvery Flower Motif Cufflinks (available at Louis Vuitton for $485) are understated in their elegance. While Louis Vuitton is generally a heavily logoed brand, we appreciate the simplicity in this lacquered pair of cufflinks that come in three colors (editor’s choice: parm).

COTO Fly Cufflinks
You don’t have to be a fly fisherman to appreciate these finely constructed COTO Fly Cufflinks (available at COTO for $85). Made out of all natural premium feathers, sterling silver connection links, and South American Corozo nut, these cufflinks come in six styles (editor’s choice: royal wulff blue). Each cufflink is handmade in Boise, Idaho and a portion of each sale benefits fedflyfishers.org, a 43 year old international non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of the sport of fly fishing through conservation, restoration and education.

Tateossian Square Bolt Lapis Cufflinks
There’s nothing we don’t love about the Tateossian Square Bolt Lapis Cufflinks (available at Tateossian for $325). Made out of sterling silver that’s rhodium plated to maintain luster and prevent tarnishing, these bolt and wing nut designed cufflinks are accentuated with a flush cross inlay of lapis stone (aka lapis lazuli, once used by the ancient Egyptians for their scarabs and thought by the Romans to be an aphrodisiac). While we can’t guarantee anything mystical, we’re confident these cufflinks will empower you with a new found sense of confidence when worn.

Links of London Menagerie Pig in Wellies T-Bar Cufflinks
We’re not exactly sure what draws us to the Links of London Menagerie Pig in Wellies T-Bar Cufflinks (available at Links of London for $225), but we’re fairly sure this reaffirms our affinity for all things porcine (even when not edible, apparently). Made of sterling silver in a T-bar shape for ease of sliding into your French cuffs, these whimsically random pigs with Wellingtons on their feet could also easily double as Monopoly player tokens.

Suzanne Felsen Star Cufflinks
Remember how good it felt getting that little gold star on your homework assignment when you were a kid? You can relive that moment, albeit in a more grown up fashion with the Suzanne Felsen Star Cufflinks (available at Barneys for $350). These azure stars are made of faceted lapis and set in sterling silver—just a little more substantial, but no less joy-inducing than those happy little gold stars we used to love.

dunhill Gear Stick Cufflinks
Inspired by their Motorities heritage, the dunhill Gear Stick Cufflinks (available at dunhill for $340) is an exercise in appreciating detailed craftsmanship. Set on sterling silver, the face of the cufflink is made from black resin and the gear selector plate’s fifth gear is replaced by the dunhill d. Car and cufflink enthusiasts alike will appreciate these cufflinks.

BRM Stainless Steel Cuff Links
We are such huge fans of BRM cufflinks that we had a lot of trouble just picking one. After much deliberation, we chose to feature the BRM Stainless Steel Cuff Links (available at Bergdorf Goodman for $510). These polished stainless steel cufflinks have a blue PVD coating, carbon fiber plates and a screw detail that hints at this French watchmaker brand’s racing image and obsession with motorsports.

BRM Brake Cuff Links
Ok, just one more from BRM. In 18K rose gold and polished stainless steel, the BRM Brake Cuff Links (available at Bergdorf Goodman for $2,050) are sublime. The drilled brake design is one we simply love.

Garrard Wings Cufflinks
With pavé black diamonds (0.95 total carat weight) and set in white gold, the Garrard Wings Cufflinks (available at Garrard by private appointment for $3,450) are the crown jewel of this collection of cufflinks. Garrard’s heritage includes having been the Crown Jeweler of the UK for over 160 years as well as remaining the oldest jewelry house in the world. And with a subversively dark elegance achieved by the black diamonds and wing design, these cufflinks will unquestionably help you stand out on any occasion, particularly your next black tie event.
