When a hybrid looks and performs like the Porsche 918 Spyder, it makes you wonder why more automotive companies don’t integrate hybrid technology into their high-performance engineering process.  Then again, it’s not that often you find a hybrid with a 500 hp V8 engine capable of propelling said hybrid up to 199 mph, which may also explain why Porsche is considering pricing this prototype (if put into production) at approximately $630,000.  Though its price tag may be exorbitant, the 918 Spyder’s aesthetic is so absurdly fluid and gorgeous (as all supercars should be in our minds) from the Ferrari-esque front fascia to detailed accents such as its exhaust pipes, that one look simply sets the price aside in that other compartment of your brain that doesn’t understand how math works.

We find it rather irksome when people reference going 360° when they really mean to say 180°.  And though most times it seems “doing a 180″ is often a positive step associated with change and moving forward, the Lomography Spinner 360° Panoramic Camera (available at Lomography for $145) proves that going full circle can be the best thing that’s ever happened to anybody.  With a rubber band drive and fully manual controls (no batteries required), the Spinner 360° uses standard 35mm film that takes up to eight full 360° panoramic photos on 36 exposure film.  Simply grasp the Spinner in one hand, pull the cord, and once you release it, the Spinner will spin on its own axis and capture imagery that is both playful and evocative, regardless of how you shoot.  Manual long exposures and sunny/cloudy aperture settings allow users to flex their creative shooting muscles and experiment to their heart’s content (a common trait within the Lomography product family).

While most crossover vehicles don’t stir up a strong sense of automotive desire, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (price TBA) manages to do so with relative ease and aplomb.  And so it’s no surprise that Land Rover is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a preview of its smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient vehicle ever produced.  Though smaller than the Land Rover LR2, the Evoque will be priced above it, but below the Range Rover Sport.  Available in both a four-door and two-door version, the Evoque features a rakish silhouette and an aggressively determined front fascia.  We don’t have much else in terms of details, but we’re looking forward to its official unveiling during the Paris auto show in late September.

While we generally don’t recommend sporting a basket on your bicycle, sometimes necessity trumps style.  But then again, why compromise?  Get the best of both worlds with the Bent Basket by Faris Elmasu (available at bentbasket.com for $180).  Conceived by a local San Francisco designer and avid cyclist, the Bent Basket is skillfully formed by vacuum-molding five layers of wood veneer into its unique and beautifully light design.  Integrated nylon straps keep your stuff from hitting the pavement and an aluminum frame keeps the whole thing attached to your bicycle frame.  And just in case you needed to know, the maximum carrying weight, according to Elmasu, is a 12 pack of beer (just enough to get your next summer party started off right).

Get big sound from the most compact of audio equipment with the I.dear Speakers by Sang-bum Kim (available at the MoMa Store for $36).  This mini cube of a speaker is made out of wood and comes with a USB connector for charging and a standard jack to plug into most audio sources (with the iPod nano being as good a choice as any).  Just plug, play, and let the rich sounds roll.

If there’s one thing we love about family style meals (e.g. dim sum in Chinatown), it’s the easy access to the food via the Lazy Susan.  Using the same ingenious functionality that makes the Lazy Susan one of the greatest inventions ever, the Quirky Cradle iPad Lap Desk (available at Quirky for $53) lets you use your iPad in either a landscape or portrait view with just a quick spin on its integrated soft-touch plastic plate.  The Quirky Cradle is constructed from Plyboo (a bamboo plywood that’s a sustainable as well as beautifully finished alternative to regular wood).  And with a foam cushion that’s built into the underside of the Cradle, you can let it rest comfortably on your lap as you sit back and enjoy your iPad as it was meant to be (i.e. with utter ease).

The Apple iPhone 4 (available at Apple starting from $199) is here (well, June 24th to be exact, although pre-orders are being accepted now).  And there’s no question the ability for video calling via WiFi using two built-in cameras (called FaceTime) is iPhone 4’s most intriguing new functionality—something no other phone offers (for now).  In addition, with four times the pixel count of previous iPhones, Retina display ensures iPhone 4’s screen clarity is pristine, while HD video recording and editing capabilities as well as a new 5 megapixel camera with built-in LED flash exceed what you’d typically find on any other smartphone.  Powered by the updated operating system iOS 4, iPhone 4 allows users to run more than one third-party program at the same time (something we hope the iPad will eventually do as well).  And it doesn’t hurt that iPhone 4 lost a bit of weight, being 24 percent thinner than the 3GS, paired with improved battery life (up to seven hours of 3G talk).  Available in both black and white, the editors at DS are convinced it’s just a matter of time before we start to see iPhone 4 come in a vast array of colors.
