Whenever asked at restaurants to choose from sparkling or still water, the editors at DS always request a glass of New York’s finest (tap water). The Vapur Anti-Bottle (available at Vapur for $9) is just one more simple way to limit bottled water usage while actually making life that much easier for you as well. The 16 ounce Anti-Bottle is incredibly portable as you can easily roll it up and compactly store it when not in use. Made from an FDA-approved, BPA-free polymer with an inner layer that’s odor, taste and stain-resistant, the Vapur Anti-Bottle is not only dishwasher safe, but also can be safely frozen. And with each Vapur purchase, your support helps further water-related environmental causes as Vapur participates in 1% For The Planet, among other environmentally conscious measures.

The Audi e-tron represents Audi’s first significant foray into the high performance electric vehicle market. Though still just a concept car, the e-tron is an engineering and design revelation. The e-tron immediately strikes you with an assertive front fascia that’s compellingly defined by a single-frame grille flanked by two large air intakes. Adaptive matrix beam headlamps are aggressively designed and powered by high-efficiency LED lights that reflexively change intensity and brightness according to weather conditions. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the e-tron accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, has a top speed of 124 mph, and has a travel range of approximately 150 miles on a six to eight hour charge (using a household current via a cable and plug). Two electric motors are mounted on the front axle and another two are mounted behind the rear axle, thereby achieving true quattro performance as torque flows distinctively to each wheel based on driving conditions. With similar design lines to the much loved R8, but with zero emissions, the Audi e-tron is hopefully an auspicious presage of a production vehicle in the near future.

The Go Love Rocker by Loll (available at Loll for $630) is more than just a fresh interpretation of a love seat (one that happens to rock, literally). It’s also an example of how various disparate sourcing and design elements can beautifully converge into one unique product. Made out of 100% superior grade recycled high density polyethylene (i.e. 720 recycled milk jugs), the Go Love Rocker is designed with impeccable quality, durability and environmental sustainability in mind. Whether it’s the fact that Loll uses the same materials and fabrication methods as skatepark contractor, TrueRide, supports carbon offset projects, as well as ships packages using recycled cardboard boxes and padding, it’s obvious that Loll provides thoughtfully designed pieces of outdoor furniture that not only resonate from a modern aesthetic perspective, but also from an environmentally conscious one as well.

Designed with riders and their carbon footprint in mind, the Enertia Electric Motorcycle by Brammo (available from Brammo for $11,995) features a forged aluminum monocoque structure that’s stiff and yet incredibly light, enhancing maneuverability and the overall riding experience. The Enertia is powered by six Lithium Phosphate battery modules whose state of the art technology ensures a significantly greater level of safety, reliability and longevity than most traditional Lithium-ion batteries. And to power-up the batteries, just plug the Enertia into any wall outlet and it’ll be fully charged in just over three hours. The Enertia is ideal as a commuting motorcycle and has a travel range of over 45 miles. But with 100% of its torque available from 0 rpm, the Enertia can also take you from 0 to 30 mph in 3.8 seconds and tops out at over 50 mph. Available in five colors (editor’s choice: White Noise), the Enertia displays narrow, yet well balanced proportions that are emphasized by its simple yet evocative design. Ultimately, the Enertia is a motorcycle for riders with purist motorcycling values at heart, and also a legitimate concern in preserving the environment in which they ride today.

As a technology collaboration between Segway and General Motors, the Segway P.U.M.A. Prototype represents the next step in the evolution of the personal urban transportation vehicle and as of now, it’s the only one of its kind. The Segway P.U.M.A. is currently configured for two people and features a proprietary dynamic stabilization system that uses angular rate sensors and accelerometers to identify orientation and send power to the motors, as necessary, to ensure proper acceleration and balance. The P.U.M.A. has a top speed between 25 – 35 mph and an approximate travel range of 25 – 35 miles. An intuitive steering console allows users to accelerate and brake by simply pushing away or pulling in the steering console as appropriate. And with a Lithium Ion battery and regenerative braking capabilities, the Segway P.U.M.A. is both cost efficient and environmentally friendly, requiring only about $0.60 worth of electricity for a full charge.

Modern Cabana defines space as “sufficient freedom from external pressure to develop or explore one’s needs, interests, and individuality.” And when you look through the line of small pre-fabricated buildings Modern Cabana offers, it’s clear each model (available at Modern Cabana from $500 – $67,500) embodies their design premise that “adding space should be simple and affordable yet look great.” Founded by Casper Mork-Ulnes and Nick Damner, this San Francisco-based, family-owned business focuses on beautifully simple and sustainable living structures. Modern Cabana uses FSC certified framing, lumber, siding, recycled denim insulation, and bamboo flooring, among other environmentally friendly materials, to construct everything from backyard additions such as dog houses to studios with bathroom and kitchen. And regardless of which model you choose, once completed, you’ll rediscover the pleasure of reveling in your very own oasis of space that is the Modern Cabana.

Founded in 2006 by Nathaniel Freeman and Benjamin Ferencz, Freeman Transport is a Montana-based company that hand-builds some of the coolest bicycles we’ve seen, all the while focusing on using sustainable materials and limiting their overall impact to the environment as much as possible. We’re particularly fond of the Freeman Transport Gravel Racer (available at Freeman Transport for $985) with its aesthetic homage to Nathaniel Freeman’s great-great-grandfather, whose contributions as an inventor during the Industrial Revolution included the sights for the Colt .45. The Gravel Racer is patinaed with gun bluing and ferric browns and with such a natty appearance, it seems almost out of place in 2009. And while the Gravel Racer can be customized with couplings, stainless steel luggage rack, chain guard, fenders, and can be built fixed or coaster braked, what makes this bicycle special is that it can be entirely broken down and packed into a signature waxed canvas and leather carrying case, whose dimensions of 26” x 26” ensure the bicycle can be checked as baggage without an oversize fee. And with one simple tool to manage all this, it’s the ultimate travel bicycle that can come with you wherever you go.

It seems more and more these days, being environmentally conscious doesn’t require any sacrifices in the design department and the Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop Computer (available at Dell starting at $499) is no exception. The Studio Hybrid is Dell’s most environmentally friendly computer, featuring an ultra compact design 80% smaller than standard desktops. The Studio Hybrid meets Energy Star 4.0 standards while using 70% less power than most desktops as well as having packaging made from 95% recyclable materials. And with its Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Processors and features including an optional digital/analog TV tuner, slot-load DVD, HDMI, and optional Blu-ray, the Studio Hybrid’s performance and efficiency demonstrate this desktop has a lot more to offer than just a sleek exterior. That said, you can choose from an array of interchangeable colors or premium sleeves (editor’s choice: bamboo) and customize this smart little desktop to be your very own.
