Porsche Design P’3700 Swiss Army Knife

Our fanaticism over anything PVD-coated continues with the Porsche Design P’3700 Swiss Army Knife (available at Wenger for $475) and it does anything but disappoint.  The handle and all seven implements are seamlessly coated in black PVD, giving the P’3700 an understated “cloak and dagger” aesthetic we can appreciate.  Among the implements, which include (but are not limited to) a large blade, corkscrew and can opener, we find the patented locking screwdriver and springless scissors with a serrated, self-sharpening design especially appealing just based on their practicality.  And weighing just 3.8 oz with a 3.25″ length, the P’3700 is probably the most lightweight, compact and affordable Porsche-designed item you’ll likely be able to afford as well as fit into your pocket for the foreseeable future.

Aquapac Waterproof iPhone Case

Whether you’re roughing it outdoors in monsoon-like conditions or just enjoying some down time in or around a body of water, the Aquapac Waterproof iPhone Case (available at Aquapac for $30) guarantees you’re able to stay connected to somebody to bail you out of trouble or just to call up a friend for a leisurely chat.  Regardless of the situation, this waterproof case lets you make and receive calls as well as take photos right through the case without any diminished signal strength.  The patented Aquaclip ensures a waterproof seal that keeps out water as well as sand and dust and ensures your iPhone’s viability (and perhaps your own) no matter how inclement the weather may be around you.

Eco Extreme Case

Whether you’re camping, hiking or just hitting the beach, the Eco Extreme Case (available at Grace Digital Audio for $50) makes it simple and safe for you to bring your music with you (through your cell phone or MP3 player), regardless of the weather conditions.  Simply hook up your MP3 player (let’s face it, it’s probably an iPod) to the Eco Extreme via a universal 1/8″ headset jack, and you’ll have your music coming in clearly through a built-in 3″ full range forward firing speaker.  A rubberized and waterproof outershell prevents the usual suspects (e.g. water, sand, schmutz) from damaging your audio device, and with extra storage space, you can even throw in your keys and credit cards as well.  The Eco Extreme also comes with a detachable carabiner clip, allowing you the flexibility to clip the case wherever you see fit, while keeping your hands free as you face (or embrace) the elements, all the while with your theme song playing on in the background.

Kodak PlaySport Video Camera

When you find yourself 10 feet underwater (and intentionally at that), the Kodak PlaySport Video Camera (available at Kodak for $140) is the ideal companion for documenting all your subaquatic shenanigans in 1080p HD clarity.  This waterproof digital video camera features a high-contrast two inch color LCD screen with a glare shield when shooting in bright environments as well as electronic image stabilization for when you’re recording on the move.  The PlaySport also takes 5 MP HD still shots and with its built-in software, you can edit, upload and share the photos and videos capturing all your under (and above) water memories with all your friends via Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Grillery Standard by Grillworks

The argument is typically gas vs. charcoal, but the Grillery Standard by Grillworks (available at Grillworks for $2,475) evokes the ethos of campfire grilling, albeit with some more serious hardware, by focusing on the simplicity and primal beauty of grilling that can only be achieved with wood.  A wheel allows you to adjust the height of the 20″ wide x 19″ deep single grill surface based on the intensity of the flames from the burning wood.  Rendered juices also run along v-slanted channels for collection so you can baste your meat or use for the base of sauces.  This American-made wood burning grill uniquely satisfies those backyard grilling aficionados who, when it comes to mastery of their outdoor cooking festivities this summer, desire a little (if not a lot) more control over every conceivable detail, all the way down to the type of wood that goes into fueling their fire.

Artful Flyer Plane Kits

Artful Flyer Plane Kits

Say or think what you will, but as kids, one of our favorite ways to pass the time was to make paper airplanes (mostly of the gliding variety as we were obsessed with hang time).  Now we know that statement dates us quite a bit, but it’s with quite a bit of nostalgia that we appreciate the Artful Flyer Plane Kits (available at Brooklyn 5 and 10 for $9).  With a balsa wood frame powered by a rubber band, the Artful Flyer comes in two models illustrated by two separate artists: Happy Flyer (in orange by Robert Shadbolt) and In the Clouds (in blue/green by Maki).  Assembly is simple and quick and before you know it, you’ll have the Artful Flyer aloft, and perhaps even reminiscing of the old days or just enjoying the opportunity to make new backyard summer memories.

FYRKAT Picnic Charcoal Grill by BODUM

FYRKAT Picnic Charcoal Grill by BODUM

Summer is officially here and that means there’s a solid three months worth of sun, cold beverages and our favorite summer pastime of outdoor grilling to look forward to enjoying.  And whether you’re tailgating, camping, or illegally grilling on your outdoor balcony, the FYRKAT Picnic Charcoal Grill by Bodum (available at BODUM for $50) is the ideal charcoal grill, especially if you happen to value portability as much as style.  Constructed out of enamel-coated steel with chrome-plated steel legs and available in six bright colors (editor’s choice: orange), the FYRKAT comes with a heat-resistant silicone handle (because you know you won’t wear oven mitts) and silicone lid clips to ensure the whole thing stays together en route to your next grill location.

Biomega Copenhagen

Biomega Copenhagen

Sometimes we like to travel in style, and other times, we just want to get from point A to point B without much fuss.  But why even choose one over the other?  Riding the Biomega Copenhagen (available at nestliving for $2,000) means you’ll never have to worry about getting your pants caught or scuffed in a chain (given a completely enclosed shaft drive) and with its frame (designed by Marc Newson and machined from a solid piece of aluminum), 26″ wheels, Shimano eight-speed rear hub, and disc brakes, the Copenhagen is a high performance bicycle with a beautifully understated design.  Whatever color you choose (all intriguingly named and hued), there’s no question the Biomega Copenhagen is a prime example of Danish design (on two wheels) at its very best.

Eva Solo Bird Box

Eva Solo Bird Box

It’s a rough and tumble world out there and it’s all the more challenging when your home is put together with nothing more than a bunch of twigs and leaves.  Let the early bird in your backyard get that worm in style with the Eva Solo Bird Box (available at Scandinavian Grace for $89).  Made of white-glazed terracotta, this birdhouse keeps your fine feathered friends protected from the elements, especially in the summer as it reflects sunlight and prevents overheating.  You can alternate between four entrance sizes (depending on the type of bird you’d like to have nesting), and the Eva Solo Bird Box even comes equipped with an internal ladder so that chicks can make their way to the entrance once ready.  And in the event this modern birdhouse gets the attention of the neighborhood felines, the slick sides and special closing lid prevents even the most inquisitive and tenacious of predators from interfering too significantly (and we’re sure any potential tenants of the Eva Solo Bird Box will appreciate that).

bobble Filtered Water Bottle

Sure, we used to drink from public water fountains all the time when we were kids, but these days, we just get a little uneasy with the quality of the water (and that metallic taste certainly never helps the situation either).  Good thing for those of us who are always on the move and like to stay hydrated, there’s the bobble Filtered Water Bottle (available at bobble for $10).  Made in the US (with a minimal carbon footprint), the bobble Filtered Water Bottle is certified BPA-free and made from recycled plastic (and is in turn fully recyclable).  Simply fill up bobble with water and as you squeeze it for a drink, the activated carbon filter’s electro-positive charge draws in impurities, organic contaminants and chemicals.  With its simple transparent design and six colorways (filters only), bobble is the one water bottle that ensures clean tasting, odorless drinking water pretty much wherever you are (although we’d suggest filling it up with water from the tap, not straight out of the East River).
