Don’t let its price point fool you. The Apollo Classic Sunglasses by SUPER (available at SUPER for approximately $125) have a provenance (handmade in Italy) many of us associate with the most high-end of automobiles (think the symbol of the prancing horse on a yellow shield). Launched in 2007 by Daniel and Simon Beckerman, SUPER produces sunglasses in a wide spectrum of designs and colors using only the highest quality materials and manufacturing processes, with the Apollo Classic being our understated, yet striking choice of sunglasses for the bright and hot summer months ahead. The translucent grey acetate is perfectly partnered with faded black Zeiss lenses, making the Apollo Classic aptly named (Apollo being the god of light and sun) and ideally designed for you to face the unforgiving sun in all its summer glory.

Sometimes the most inspired visions are the simplest and most organic ones. And that unquestionably holds true for the design direction behind Shwood Sunglasses (available at Shwood for $95). Entirely handmade in Portland, Oregon, Shwood’s debut line of sunglasses (the Canby) comes in three different locally-sourced hardwoods (editor’s choice: Zebrawood) and your choice of either 100% UVA/UVB protection Carl Zeiss lenses imported from Italy or polarized lenses as well. One look at the Canby and it’s readily apparent that Shwood focuses on revealing the natural character and luster of each hardwood used by limiting any extraneous processing of the raw materials themselves. The result is a remarkable line of sunglasses with a classic aesthetic, but one that’s executed in a brilliantly unorthodox manner.

Oversized metal and plastic frame aviator sunglasses have been a perennial favorite for the past few summers, but this season we’re particularly drawn to the smaller more compact square frame aviator sunglasses first introduced by Ray Ban’s Caravan design in 1957 (Item C). Pictured above is the Ultra version of the company’s classic design made of titanium and plated in white or yellow gold (a limited edition of 1,000). You’ll find updated renditions of the look in the Mosley Tribes Enforcer sunglasses (Item A) or in the Paul Smith PS-840 sunglasses (Item B). For added flare, the 3.1 Phillip Lim Kitt aviators are framed in blue painted titanium (Item D). And the MOSCOT Zulu sunglasses (Item E), named after the owners’ uncle, Zulu Pushkin, sports a very classic yet unique look. Whichever one of these sunglasses you choose, enjoy summer picnics, fold out beach chairs, and open up poolside Coronas while looking dapper in your smart new shades.
Item A. Mosley Tribes Enforcer Sunglasses (available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $235)
Item B. Paul Smith PS-840 Sunglasses (available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $340)

While better known for his womenswear collections, Phillip Lim recently launched an eyewear line that grabbed our attention. The Lance Sunglasses by 3.1 Phillip Lim (available at MODO for $225) are hand made in Japan and have a retro aviator style executed tastefully in acetate plastic (editor’s choice: ivory with gradient green lenses). They’re lightweight, extremely comfortable to wear, and let’s face it, make you look a hell of a lot cooler than you really are.
